WTA Auckland 2020 Injury Report – Bianca Andreescu and Monica Puig have withdrawn from the opening event of 2020 at Auckland, and Puig’s injury will see her out for the 1st Major of the season as well.
As most of you who followed the 2019 campaign know, Andreescu was dealing with a lingering back injury that saw her eventually bow out of the end-of-year WTA Finals. After the first set against Karolína Plíšková during purple group play at Shenzhen, Andreescu had to just submit to the pain and walked off the court back in October. Sofia Kenin came in to replace her after her day 4 ousting.
We know the back injury was the bigger concern at the time because she came off the court and as only Bianca could state it she said, “My friggin back is killing me!” While she also hurt her knee in the match, it was all just a harsh way to end what was a remarkable 2019 for the Canadian star. Her back is not what caused her to announce her dismissal from the upcoming Auckland lineup on January 6. This time it is a knee injury that is causing her more pain then she had hoped to be dealing with to begin another long campaign.
The knee hasn’t had enough time and Bianca sent out a heartfelt tweet about being unable to make an appearance at Auckland again.
Monica got her news in a much different fashion, as she made her way to New York to find out that she needed surgery to repair an ulnar nerve in her right elbow.

The announcement came from her Instagram page and tennis.com picked up the story. You can clearly see her bionics wrapped around that elbow but she will sadly also be absent from the Australian Open as well. We will not know her schedule, obviously, until she announced her progress with the injury.
So, we have not even gotten to the 2020 WTA campaign yet and we have two big players announcing plans to start the season on the sidelines.
We wish them speedy recoveries and hope to see them both back on the court soon!
